The “Global System for Mobile Communications” or GSM is the largest mobile network across the globe. The requirement for use of GSM network is a mobile handset that is unlocked and an International SIM Card. Ordinarily the GSM phones would require a small electronic chip which is squire sized and can be inserted in the slot at the backside of your handset and contains all the details of yours as the subscriber.  You can enjoy no less than 320 GSM networks around 170 countries with a world wide GSM Mobile service.

Handset compatibility –

For perfect results your handset should be compatible with SIM Card which means your SIM Card should be unlocked.  It is a standing practice among the manufacturers and dealers to lock the handset so that it remains compatible to a particular SIM and not with others.  In such cases your handset will not function when some other types of SIM Card is inserted in it.  But if the mobile set is unlocked it will work with any national or international SIM Card in it.  It will work with the same efficiency with the UK SIM Card as it would work with France SIM Card.

Gradually with the consciousness growing among the customers the manufacturers are making their handsets unlocked to remove the restrictions.  Majority of the GSM networks in the world operate at around 900 MHz or at 1900 MHz.  The only exceptions are USA and Canada where your require handsets operating at 1900 MHz. Therefore when you are going for a new handset you must check these aspects and the compatibility aspects too.

Communication capabilities

SMS or the text message service is one of the most popular components of the GSM mobile services available.  It helps you sending and receiving short messages to and from GSM mobile phones. Most GSM networks and services support this process. However you require a message center number that should have been stored in your SIM Card.

In case of country based GSM SIM Cards you will not need the country code much to be used.  However when it comes to international use of SIM Cards and you travel overseas the use of the country code becomes essential.  For example if you desire your UK SIM Card to work outside UK then you have to add the country code that is 44.  There are also certain cases where you need not use the country code even and that is when you use an all compatible international SIM Card.

PIN & PUK

Important part of your SIM Card is the Professional Identification Number or PIN.  This can be used to lock the card so that it cannot be stolen or misused. Some of the providers pre-set the SIM with such default numbers. After you procure the SIM Card, for security reasons, it would be better if you change this PIN with your personal preferred number.

There is one word of caution for you in use of PIN.  If it is entered ten times consecutively the SIM Card will become invalidated and will be of no use to you.
